Social Media Coordinator @ Inbox with Rebecca Connolly

Social Media Coordinator @ Inbox with Rebecca Connolly

Rebecca and Blair discuss the importance of a “taking a shot” mindset to help get a job she loves, how thinking about buying shoes can help with the job search; and, why the algorithms are always on her mind.

About Rebecca Connolly

Rebecca Connolly has a career mission to follow her passions, beat the algorithm and have a little fun along the way. After years of post-secondary education in pursuit of a career in teaching, like many, she was forced to pivot amid the pandemic, ultimately landing her in the digital marketing space.

Rebecca started working in digital marketing at Pocketed, a financial services startup as their Digital Marketing Coordinator. She was there for 8 months during which she realized the company and the role weren’t he right fit for her, so she looked for a different role in social media marketing. Rebecca heard of the Social Media Coordinator job at Inkbox through a high school acquaintance's post on their Instagram and was lucky enough to connect with the hiring manager and ultimately land the role.

The Highlights and Hottest Takes 🔥

How Rebecca Got the Job

Rebecca used direct messages on LinkedIn and Instagram social networks to go beyond the application and connect with people in the organizations she was most interested in. For her first job at Pocketed, Rebecca applied to the job posting on Indeed then followed up directly with the CEO:

“Because Pocketed is a smaller startup company I was able to message the CEO. Within 20 minutes I was on a phone interview with the CEO. An hour later was another phone interview with the hiring manager. And I was hired as a digital marketing generalist a couple of days later.”

Mistake Made

Don’t be afraid to put your ideas out there. “You’ll inevitably have some very bad ideas. It’s through sharing these ideas that you might find the diamond in the rough.”

Lesson Learned

Get comfortable with rejection because not every job will be a fit. Or using the buying shoes metaphor: “If you see a beautiful pair of shoes, but they don’t fit then they’re not the right shoes for you, so you’ve got to keep shopping. There will be other shoes.”

Pro Tip

It's OK to "miss a shot." You'll make some, and you'll miss some–be ready for them. When you miss it's about how can I learn from this to apply to the next idea.

“If you weren’t ready, you wouldn’t be in the position to have the opportunity to take the shot…so take it!”
