Growth Marketer @ Growclass with Hannah Permell

Growth Marketer @ Growclass with Hannah Permell

Hannah and Blair discuss the importance of having empathy as a marketer, a rookie mistake of not checking your links; and how the Barbie brand captured hearts and minds in summer 2023.

About Hannah Permell

Hannah’s superpowers are email marketing, copywriting and community. She loves connecting with people and figuring out what motives them to act. That natural curiosity led her to a career in marketing. Hannah works as a Growth Marketer at Growclass, a bootstrapped startup based in Toronto that teaches growth marketing skills to founders, marketers, and freelancers. It’s a small team of 3, where she works directly with the Founder & CEO to grown the business.

The Highlights and Hottest Takes 🔥

How Hannah Got the Job

Hannah completed a postgraduate certificate in digital marketing from George Brown College in 2020, which was the early days of the global pandemic. The job market was in turmoil so she helped family members do digital marketing for their small businesses to get experience on her resume. Eventually, Hannah saw a Retweet from a Professor with an internship job posting at Growclass, and she applied to it…along with 400 other people. “I’m gonna shoot my shot. I was being cheeky with my copy to try to stand out from the competition. It worked. I got the internship role and went from there.”

Mistake Made

Test your email before you send it. “Sent out email before testing links and they didn’t work.” Manager encouraged me to “Take a moment, step away from your computer. Take a deep breath.” and then come back to it. My own-it-with-humour response using Adele lyrics turned a failure into a win.

“Don’t be too hard on yourself. It’s not life or death, anything can be fixed.”

Lesson Learned

Failure is feedback. There’s so much to learn from making mistakes. Think you need to get it right the first time. Don’t be afraid to swing and miss.

"Take feedback and apply it to be a better person.”

Pro Tip

Nothing worth having comes easy. Things you work hard for you’re often the proudest of.

“Don’t be afraid to take a longer or different path for you.”
