Performance Marketer @ Cello with Sakshi Dubey

Sakshi and Blair discuss how to develop basic marketing skills to help get your first job if your undergraduate isn’t in marketing, the importance of being realistic and telling the truth in the job search; and, the big decision to quit your job and move internationally to go to school to do a Master’s degree in Digital Marketing.
👋 About Sakshi Dubey
An Engineer turned Marketer; Sakshi’s journey has been all about figuring things out. She started with an undergraduate degree in engineering in 2020 and then started moving towards digital marketing. However, not having any previous solid knowledge in the field, landing a job was tough. Few certifications like Introduction to Digital Marketing from Google helped in understanding the basics. Sakshi’s first job in marketing was at Cello in performance marketing for eCommerce, where she “actually learned everything, even Microsoft Excel”! Over 1.5 years there she handled multiple advertising accounts for the brand on Amazon and other e-commerce sites and explored some of the best optimisation techniques. During this time, Sakshi wanted to understand why decisions are taken like they were and also strengthen her marketing foundation, which prompted her to decide to pursue a master’s degree in Digital Marketing from University College Dublin in 2023-2024.
🔥 Highlights and Hot Takes
How They Got the Job
A friend referred Sakshi to the job opening at Cello. But what separated her from other applicants to get her the job was being honest about her experience/skills, which the hiring manager appreciated.
“I said I’ve done the certification. I haven’t done it yet at work, but I understand how it’s done and I’ll do my best. Can I make sense of the data? And I said Yes!”
Mistake Made
Making calculation errors. Working with so much data you need to be detail-oriented and you will make an error sometimes. Just try to keep an eye out for it, for something that doesn’t look right or “feel right”.
“Even being so particular about everything, you’ll still miss something because the data in the spreadsheet is so vast.”
Lesson Learned
Keep learning. Every day was something new for me. A small formula. A new marketing term. Making changes in Canva. Keep working on it day by day. “Not all days are gonna be the best one. Roll with the rejections.”
Pro Tip
Do online certifications to get familiar with marketing platforms. Keep learning, it’s never a bad thing. “Doesn’t demonstrate knowledge, but shows basic awareness of the platform.”

Performance Marketer
An Engineer turned Marketer my journey has been all about figuring things out . I completed my graduation back in 2020 and knew that marketing was the field that I wanted to make my career in. However, not having any previous solid knowledge in the field, landing a job was tough. Few certifications like Introduction to Digital Marketing from Google helped in understanding the basics. My first job in the field of E-commerce and digital marketing here at Cello was where I actually learned everything, even EXCEL !
Now, 1.4 years I’ve handled multiple ads account for the brand on Amazon and other e-commerce sites and explored some of the best optimisation techniques.
I started my journey with undergrad in engineering and then moving towards Digital Marketing. During my 1.5 years of working for brand I wanted to understand , why decisions are taken like they were and also make my foundation strong. I then decided to pursue my MSc Digital Marketing from University College Dublin and currently in Week 5 of the course.
